Omaha Holdem Poker

Omaha Holdem Poker or simply Omaha Poker is an exciting community card Poker game similar to Texas Holdem Poker and sometimes referred as flop game. Community Poker games are called community due to a set of cards that are being dealt facing up at the middle of the Poker table and are shared by all of the Poker players in the game. In Omaha Holdem Poker there are five community cards.

The most important thing to remember in Omaha Holdem Poker is that you need to use exactly two hole cards and exactly three community cards to make your hand. Omaha Holdem Poker often called the game of "the nuts", because at usually takes "the nuts" to win at a showdown.

No one knows the definite origin of Omaha Holdem Poker, but it was first introduced at the Las Vegas Golden Nugget Casino by Robert Turner and Bill Boyd. It was called than Nugget Holdem.

The name Omaha is referring to different Poker styles, the original is called Omaha High, the High-Low split version is called Omaha high-low or Omaha eight-or-better or Omaha8. The original Omaha High is usually played pot limit, and than called PLO.

PLO Omaha Holdem Poker is known to be a drawing Poker game, you have to draw for the nut hand, as second best hands, even second best straights and flushes are often beaten. In a pot limit Poker game the pot growth can go wild so the players staying to the end might win or loose big time.

Our Online Poker room

In "WalkerPoker- Online Poker Room" you can play Omaha High with different betting limits:
  • Limit Omaha High poker room– Applying a specific betting limit in each game and on each betting round. For Example in a $2/$4 limit Poker game, in the first two betting rounds the bet will be $2 and in the last couple betting rounds it will be $4. There is an addition limitation of four bets per player in each betting round (they carry the names: bet, raise, re-raise, cap).
  • Pot limit Omaha High poker room– A player can bet only as high as the amount in the pot is, nevertheless there is no limit on the number of raises a Poker player can make in one betting round, the only limitation is that a player can not re-raise himself. That way if one player raise, and all others call or fold, he can not raise any more.
  • No Limit Omaha High poker room– A player may bet unlimited amount of chips at any time. Just like in Pot-limit Omaha Poker game, here too there is no limit on the number of raises a Poker player can make in one betting round; the only limitation is that a player can not re-raise himself. That way if one player raise, and all others call or fold, he can not raise any more.

Omaha Holdem Poker versus Texas Holdem Poker

At the beginning of the Poker game, a Poker player gets two private hole cards in Texas Holdem Poker, while four private hole cards in Omaha Holdem Poker.
Both Poker games have five community cards facing up, and both Poker games have the same betting structure. The hand in Omaha Holdem Poker is made of exactly two hole cards plus exactly three of the board (community cards), whereas in Texas Holdem Poker a hand is made from any five cards. A Texas Holdem Poker player can make his hand with one, two or zero hole cards. Than has some significant affect on hands options: In both Poker games, three or more suited cards on the board makes a flush possible, but in Omaha Holdem Poker, a player must have two cards of that suit in his hand for the flush. In Texas Holdem Poker two pairs on the board makes a full house if a player has a matching card in his hand, not in Omaha Poker as a player can use only three of the board cards.

Omaha Holdem Poker- game structure

Omaha Holdem Poker is very similar to Texas Holdem Poker, just with different numbers of cards. Basically, a player needs to make his 5 cards Poker hand out of 9 card; four private cards, and 5 community cards.
The game structure has four major stages:

Hole Cards

Before the hole cards (or pocket cards), i.e. private starting cards are being dealt, there is a blind bet round. The Poker player sitting to the left of the dealer button is called the small blind, and has to pay a small blind which is usually half of the big blind. The player sitting to the left of the small blind is the Big blind and have to pay the big blind which is usually equal to the low bet limit (in a $10/$20 game, the big blind will be $10). Than each player get dealt four cards, facing down, and the first betting round starts.

The first Poker player to bet on the first betting round is the player sitting to the left of the big blind. He can choose between betting, raising or folding, the players after him can call, raise or fold. In the first betting round a player can only bet or raise according to the game's set betting amount. For example, in a $2/$4 game, a bet will be $2 and a raise would be $4 (the $2 from the bet plus $2).

The flop

At the flop stage in Omaha Poker game, three community cards are being dealt on the table facing up; those cards are shared by all of the Poker players. Than begins the second betting round of the Poker game.

Just like every betting round in a Poker game, the second betting round starts with the Poker player sitting to the left of the dealer button.  This player can make a bet or he can fold, but if he does not want to bet he would probably check, this means he is still in the game but do not want to place a bet yet. Checking is allowed only if there was no bet placed so far in the betting round. As soon as a bet is made, players are not allowed to check they can only call, raise or fold. Here too, just like in the first betting round, the amount of bets and raises is pre set and equal to the low limit bet.

The Turn

At Omaha Poker game's Turn, a fourth community card is being dealt facing up, than the third betting round begins.

As you probably already know, the first Poker player to bet will be the one player sitting to the left of the dealer button. All the applied rules  are the same, only the betting limit is going up now from the low limit to the high limit, that way in a $2/$4 Poker game, the bet will be set to $4.

The River

At the River stage of Omaha Poker game the fifth up facing community card is placed at the Poker table. After the last card was dealt, the fourth and last betting round begins.

Same rules, the round starts with the Poker player sitting to the left of the dealer button. Bets and raises are limited to the high betting limit. In their turn every player is entitled to bet, raise, call, check (if no bet have made so far) or fold.

Showdown

All players still active in the Poker game have to show their hand made, composed of exactly 2 of their hole private cards and exactly three of the community cards. In a case of a tie, when two or more of the players have the same hand, they split the pot.

All-In player

During betting rounds, if a player runs out of chips and do not have enough to call a bet, he is getting the title all-in player, that means he is active in the main pot up to that stage, and if he wins he is entitled to a portion relative to the amount of chips he put in the pot. Than a side pot is being open for the other Poker player to keep betting.

Dealer button's rules

The dealer position in an Online Poker Room is being marked by a small disc called the dealer button or simply the button. The dealer position is very significant for the betting movement, in online poker room.

The first thing that is set up by the dealer button is the blinds as the blinds are being paid by the couple Poker players at the Online Poker Room, positioned to the left of the button. It is important to understand that paying a blind means betting before seeing your cards that might be really poor.

The second issue determined in regard with the dealer button is the betting order, always the Poker player to the left of the button start betting. The later a Poker player is to bet, the better position he has, as he have more information about the opponent players situation according to their bettings.

In Online poker room, the first Poker player to sit at the Poker table gets the dealer button, whereas in a Poker tournament the first Poker player to get the button is determined by cards draw. Each Poker player gets one card, and the player with the highest card gets the button first. If two or more players share the same ranking highest card, than the button is determined by suits order (Spade, Hearts, Diamond, Club – high to low). After a hand is done the dealer button moves clock wise to the next Poker player to make the game fair to all players, blinds wise and betting position wise.

Blinds special rules

When a player first joins an active table in online poker room, he is requested to pay an amount equal to the big blind as an active bet. In addition, every Poker player that re-enter a Poker table must pay the small blind (not as an active bet but just as a small add to the pot) and the big blind (as an active bet) if they have missed the blinds while away. This is done to prevent players from living the game in their turn to pay the blinds, end joining when they are in late position (to bet). They as well have the option to wait until the button is in their position.
